News from the coppice
As many of you will know, we've been restoring hazel coppice across Central Scotland for the last decade or so. Coppicing is one of the earliest forms of woodland management which involves cutting trees to ground level, creating a ‘stool’, and encouraging new shoots to grow. When coppice is actively managed, it produces straight sticks that can be used for fencing, hedging, baskets, and building. It also increases biodiversity, as it introduces light to a specific area, encouraging ground flora, insects and birds.
With funding from the Climate Hub - a programme of FEL Scotland, Scotland’s International Environment Centre at the University of Stirling and the Scottish Government - and Reforesting Scotland, we were able to hold a celebration of coppicing earlier this year, welcoming school kids and volunteers into Kirkton Wood. Here's a short video of the event.
